Summary and Conclusion

By now most of you have already concluded that the subject of diabetes mellitus is multi-factorial and very complex, it is a disease of lifestyle neglect---in most cases, it is primarily a disease of industrialized nations, it is a disease of devastating consequences, it is a disease poorly treated by modern medicine, and it is a disease that you would rather not have. You probably have also recognized that traditional and alternative medicine offer similar but different treatment approaches to diabetes mellitus.

Where both disciplines emphasize the importance of diet, it is the alternative approach that more clearly defines the parameters. As suggested above, the diet becomes the backbone of diabetes therapy to the alternative practitioner. The clear differences are that the alternatives approach utilizes a of higher percent intake of complex carbohydrates and mixed fiber (soluble and insoluble). It is the belief of many alternative practitioners that the traditional medical approach toward the dietary guidelines for diabetes probably perpetuates the disease---to say the least it certainly adds to the income of those involved in the care and treatment of the diabetics, especially if you consider the cost of treating the complications associated with diabetes.

Alternative medicine feels strongly that exercise is the key to the coordination of all other treatment recommendations such as diet, vitamins, minerals and other supplements.

It is in the use of vitamins, minerals and other supplements that traditional medicine takes a major step backwards. They draw a line in the sand! So to speak. It is a line beyond which the traditional medical practitioner refuses to cross, regardless of the benefits demonstrated over the years---granted there are only limited well defined, double blind, cross-over studies to support the use of supplementation. Who cares? The proof is in the results! And, to you and I, this is all that matters.
